Your Baby's Nutrition Begins with You

When starting your baby on solid foods, keep in mind that they should receive the bulk of their nutrition from breast milk or formula. Solid food is more about your baby exploring new tastes and textures than it is about nutrition during the first year. However, don’t shy away from introducing a wide array of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains into your baby’s meals. The greater variety of food he tastes his first year of life, the more varied (and nutritious) his diet will be later in life.

The Building Blocks for Baby Nutrition

All of Nurture Plus recipes are labeled with color blocks. These colors represent important food categories essential to a healthy diet, grouped according to similar nutritional components. For example, winter squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and carrots are a part of the orange category, thanks to their similar vibrant hue and their abundance of beta-carotene. This color coding system simplifies parents’ job of introducing a nutritious variety of foods to your baby.

Once your baby is a year old, it’s time to pay close attention to his nutrition intake. Parents can use the graph below as a guideline (or see Nutrition Checklist PDF) and allow their little ones to help check off the “colors” they eat throughout the day. For example, if your toddler eats a serving of broccoli, have her check off a green square in the vegetable category. This exercise will encourage healthy eating while ensuring optimal nutrition. It’s a win-win for mom and toddler!
